Program Overview

The Accounting Technician Associate of Applied Science degree at Taylor Business Institute prepares students for entry-level accounting and bookkeeping roles in small and mid-sized organizations.

This applied degree leads off with an introduction to the Entrepreneurship track but primarily focuses on practical accounting skills, real-world business scenarios, and the use of industry-standard software and tools. Students gain a strong foundation in financial accounting, payroll and taxation, managerial accounting, and business law, while also developing essential computer, communication, and workplace skills needed for professional success.

The program is designed for students seeking immediate entry into the workforce, as well as those interested in continuing their education or exploring small business and entrepreneurship opportunities.

What You Will Learn

Through a combination of lectures, labs, and applied coursework, students will learn how to:

  • Record and analyze financial transactions using the accounting cycle.
  • Prepare and interpret basic financial statements, including balance sheets and income statements
  • Apply payroll systems and federal taxation rules for individuals and businesses
  • Use budgeting, cost accounting, and managerial accounting techniques to support business decisions
  • Utilize accounting software, spreadsheets, and business applications to manage financial data

    Coursework combines theory with lab-based practice and hands-on workshops, ensuring students apply what they learn in realistic accounting and business development scenarios.

Applied Learning & Capstone Experience

Applied learning is integrated throughout the program and culminates in the Integrative
Seminar in Accounting
Technician.
Students complete practical assignments such as:

  • Preparing journal entries and ledgers
  • Creating financial statements
  • Completing payroll and tax calculations
  • Developing budgets and cost analyses
  • Simulating small business accounting operations
  • Creating a business plan for a small start-up using principles learned.


    In the final integrative seminar, students demonstrate job-readiness by applying their accounting knowledge in a comprehensive project that reflects real workplace expectations.

Career Outcomes

Graduates of the Accounting Technician program are prepared for entry-level positions, including:

    • Accounting Clerk
    • Bookkeeping Assistant
    • Billing and Posting Clerk

Accreditation & Continued Education

Taylor Business Institute is institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education to award associate degrees and certificates. TBI’s programs are designed for immediate workforce entry, while also providing opportunities for continued education. Graduates of Associate of Applied Science degree programs may pursue further studies at four year colleges or universities offering compatible programs, subject to the transfer policies of the receiving institution.
